The campaign creates opportunities to partner with the AMA as it moves into a much larger and more adaptable space in the Arlington Entertainment District

Today, the Arlington Museum of Art announced the launch of its Outside the Lines: Reimagine the AMA campaign. The campaign creates opportunities for current and potential partners, donors, arts enthusiasts, and collaborators to immediately get involved with and support the museum as it moves into a newer, much larger and more adaptable space. This follows a joint release in April by the City of Arlington and the Arlington Museum of Art, which outlined a plan for the museum to relocate inside the Arlington Expo Center, located at 1200 Ballpark Way in the Arlington Entertainment District.

The museum’s current location, a repurposed 1950’s-era JCPenney building, has 5,500 square feet of exhibition space. Through a new use agreement partnership unanimously approved by Arlington City Council, the museum’s new location provides approximately 42,000 square feet of gallery space.

Renderings by Duvall Decker provide insight into the scope of the campaign, which will proceed in two phases. Phase I will focus on technology, interior galleries, and new programming, and Phase II will focus on the building exterior.

While the opportunities are numerous, the common thread is innovation, says Chris Hightower, President and CEO of the Arlington Museum of Art.

“To an artist, there’s nothing more exciting than the potential of a blank canvas,” said Hightower. “The gigantic canvas provided by our partnership with the City of Arlington allows the Arlington Museum of Art to bring every kind of art experience imaginable to the region and serve our community with even greater impact.”

The move will allow the museum to explore a myriad of exhibition opportunities that were previously unavailable due to limitations of its current location. It will also allow the AMA to expand popular community traditions, including the Youth Art Month show and Summer Art Camp, which are long-standing partnerships with the Arlington Independent School District.

“Together with our campaign partners,” Hightower said, “we will create galleries and host traditional works by the great masters, invest in technology that will immerse guests in art that blends artistry and technology, and present interactive installations that engage audiences with the art itself. On top of that, each and every exhibition is an opportunity for innovation, education, and community engagement! As a part of our expanding creative and curatorial vision, we even have plans to commission original digital and interactive experiences.”

“The relocation of the Arlington Museum of Art to The District is meant to be a bold statement,” said Arlington Mayor Jim Ross. “We’re telling the world that Arlington can do it all. We are home to the greatest sports franchises in the country, a Tier One University, the National Medal of Honor Museum, Six Flags Over Texas, and now, a world-class location for our premier art museum.”

The museum will continue to operate in its current location until early 2024.
