Youth Art Month Show

Since 1990, the Arlington Museum of Art has partnered with the Arlington Independent School District to host the city’s Youth Art Month show. This unique collaboration with AISD is an important part of the museum’s commitment to encourage young artists, support art education, and engage with our community.

In 2024, and for the first time, Youth Art Month will be held in our beautiful new Community Gallery inside the new AMA.

Admission is (and always has been) free to Youth Art Month, so come see the talent and sheer numbers of students’ paintings, drawings, sculptures, and other media on display!

The Roots of Youth Art Month

A Commitment to Art, Artists, and Education

The roots of the Arlington Museum of Art are deeply embedded in the intersection of art and education.

The AMA began in 1952 as the Arlington Art Association, which was founded by civic leaders with the guidance of Howard and Arista Joyner. Howard was head of the art department of North Texas Agricultural College (now the University of Texas at Arlington). Arista was the first art teacher at Arlington High School, and went on to develop the art department at Tarrant County Junior College (now Tarrant County College). Through their visionary leadership and passion for art education, Arlington Museum of Art and the Arlington Independent School District have been close collaborators for decades.

The AMA-AISD Youth Art Month collaboration has become, by many accounts, the largest Youth Art Month event in the State of Texas. Arlington Youth Art Month is held every Spring in conjunction with the Texas Youth Art Month art on display at the Capitol building in Austin and National Youth Art Month. National Youth Art Month is overseen by the Council for Art Education as a way to encourage support for quality K-12 visual art programs.

The AMA donates its entire 5,000 square feet of Community Gallery space to AISD for Youth Art Month and does not charge admission to guests. AMA Summer Art Camp

Youth Art Month isn’t the only opportunity for young artists to shine at the Arlington Museum of Art! Summer Art Camp inspires young artists by teaching them the skills and techniques they see on display in our galleries. After taking an age-appropriate guided tour of the museum, students create their own art portfolio with instruction from AISD art educators. They even get to display their work in a gallery show on the last day of camp! Snacks and art supplies are included in each camper’s registration.

Youth Art Month isn’t the only opportunity for young artists to shine at the AMA. Summer Art Camp inspires young artists by teaching them the skills and techniques they see on display in our galleries. After taking an age-appropriate guided tour of our summer exhibition, students create their own art portfolio with instruction from AISD and MISD art educators. They even get to display their work in a show on the last day of camp! Snacks and art supplies are included in each camper’s registration.
