A JOURNALIST’S JOURNEY

ABOUT MY ONE MINUTE DOCUMENTARY
by Ana-Marie Moore

At the age of 17, Jamie Moore was told that she had cancer. What had initially been an average check-up soon turned into a series of doctor’s appointments and ultimately, the discovery that she had multiple nodules in her thyroid. At the time, Moore was in the middle of the peak of her senior year. Days that were filled with thoughts of high school anatomy tests and college applications were soon pervaded by fears of upcoming surgeries and hospital visits.

After everything she’s been through, Moore struggled with the question: Why me? Why did I get to survive? However, once she enrolled at Texas State University, she knew.

As a freshman at TXST, Moore spends a lot of her days working in the engagement section of the University Star, a student-run newspaper, holding high-school journalism clinics, judging UIL debate competitions, and attending class.

“I think that journalism’s really important,” Moore said. “It’s important to share knowledge about important issues.”

Outside of her academic career, she said that she also tries to channel a lot of her energy into being a good person to others and making their lives better.

When Jamie showed me her graduation card, she pointed out a small quote on the back of it. It read:

“What is done with love is done well.”

In their Summer 2023 exhibition, the Arlington Museum of Art will be showcasing not just the creative work but also the lives of women who had to overcome their own adversity. While Moore doesn’t feel like her experience is comparable to art at the museum, she hopes that her story can help inspire and encourage others through whatever they are going through.

Meet Ana-Marie Moore

Ana-Marie Moore

Ana-Marie Moore is no stranger to the DFW area and grew up in Grandview, Texas, just an hour south of the University of Texas at Arlington. Because of this, it was a no-brainer when she chose what college she wanted to attend.

Because of her love for people, she is currently pursuing a degree in journalism with a minor in sociology. Outside of school, she works as a baker and a journalism coach. At the end of the day, she also loves to play video games with her friends and watch television with her husband, Josh.

About AMA+UTA CreateCollab

Throughout the Spring 2023 semester, the Arlington Museum of Art is partnering with The University of Texas at Arlington and a senior-level digital storytelling class to explore a wide variety of contemporary themes inspired by the museum’s mission, values, and exhibitions.

Class projects include photo essays, one-minute documentaries, and one-minute podcasts about themes as broad as sword fighting with light sabers, fulfilling family legacies, every day heroes, and modern metalsmithing.

Associate Professor of Communication Erika Pribanic-Smith, who teaches the class, values opportunities to bring real-world experiences to her students.

“My goal is to give my students real-world experience in all of my classes, creating real stories using real sources,” said Dr. Pribanic-Smith. “Creating stories that will be published for the public to see, not just submitted for a grade, gives students extra incentive to put forth their best effort. Furthermore, working with professionals gives the students another layer of feedback to re-enforce what they’re learning in the classroom. I prefer to work with organizations like the Arlington Museum of Art who will benefit in some way from the students’ content so that we are providing a service to the community.”
