In its new space, the AMA is multiplying its creative capacity to present a wide variety of traditional, immersive, and interactive exhibitions from around the world
ARLINGTON, TX (November 7, 2023) – The Arlington Museum of Art, in collaboration with Exhibits Development Group, Tempora and its Italian partner Civita, will present Pompeii: The Immortal City as the inaugural headline exhibition for its grand opening in the Arlington Entertainment District.
The exhibition, which is made possible by the Arlington Tomorrow Foundation, and the New AMA will open to the public on March 30, 2024.
From authentic art and archeological marvels to stunning immersive experiences, all the latest techniques of modern museology and technology bring the ancient city back to life. Guests will journey back to AD 79 and the fateful eruption of Mount Vesuvius in the Roman Empire. The exhibition painstakingly recreates the drama and the ruins of the ancient city, allowing visitors to experience its destruction and to identify with the inhabitants of that time, immobilized by the volcano’s ashes. Highlights of the exhibition include:
- Over 100 authentic artifacts and artworks found during archaeological excavations
- Powerful immersive sequences depicting the destruction of the city and the archeological discovery of the inhabitants immobilized in the ashes
- 3D representations of the city as it was at the moment of destruction
- Recreations of inventions and machines used in ancient Rome
- Personalized storytelling that depicts daily life in Pompeii
- Interactive learning experiences tailored for children and families
“The Arlington Museum of Art is so proud to present Pompeii: The Immortal City as the first major exhibition in our new museum building,” said Chris Hightower, president and CEO of the Arlington Museum of Art. “This is exactly the kind of world-class experience that will demonstrate the capabilities and scale of our new location in the Arlington Entertainment District.”
“The relocation of the Arlington Museum of Art to The District is meant to be a bold statement,” said Arlington Mayor Jim Ross. “We’re telling the world that Arlington can do it all. We are home to the greatest sports franchises in the country, a Tier One University, the National Medal of Honor Museum, Six Flags Over Texas, and now, a world-class location for our premier art museum.”
Amy Nobel, CEO of Exhibits Development Group, stated, “We are delighted to collaborate with the Arlington Museum of Art once again. They’ve been a valued partner for years, and this exhibition aligns perfectly with the inauguration of their new museum and their shared mission to host international cultural projects.”
The Arlington Tomorrow Foundation is the presenting sponsor for Pompeii: The Immortal City.
“All of us at the Arlington Tomorrow Foundation are delighted to continue to support the Arlington Museum of Art’s exhibitions and programming,” said Carolyn Mentesana, executive director of the Arlington Tomorrow Foundation, “and especially to help underwrite the renowned Pompeii: The Immortal City. This marks the official opening of the ‘reimagined AMA’ as the lastest, exciting addition to our Entertainment District.”
“The Arlington Tomorrow Foundation has been an incredible partner of the Arlington Museum of Art over the last decade,” said Hightower, “and their support as presenting sponsor of Pompeii: The Immortal City is both thrilling and humbling. We believe in the visual arts as a catalyst for building community, celebrating diversity, sparking innovation, and generating economic vitality. The ATF believes in the power of the arts, too. Their willingness to mentor us and invest in us over the years has helped bring our vision to life, not just for the museum but for the betterment of our amazing city.”
Additional support comes from the Arlington Convention and Visitors Bureau, plus Frost Bank, Texas Trust Credit Union, and Gary Schwartz.
