Pompeii: The Immortal City

From just-discovered art, artifacts, and archeological marvels to stunning immersive experiences, all the latest techniques of modern museology and technology bring the ancient city back to life.

Guests will journey back to AD 79 and the fateful eruption of Mount Vesuvius in the Roman Empire. The exhibition painstakingly recreates the drama and the ruins of the ancient city, allowing visitors to experience its destruction and to identify with the inhabitants of that time, immobilized by the volcano’s ashes.

The New AMA

“The Arlington Museum of Art is so proud to present Pompeii: The Immortal City as the first major exhibition in our new museum building,” said Chris Hightower, President and CEO of the Arlington Museum of Art. “This is exactly the kind of world-class experience that demonstrates the capabilities and scale of our new location in the Arlington Entertainment District.”

Transformative and World Class

“The relocation of the Arlington Museum of Art to The District is meant to be a bold statement,” said Arlington Mayor Jim Ross.

“We’re telling the world that Arlington can do it all,” Mayor Ross continued. “We are home to the greatest sports franchises in the country, a Tier One University, the National Medal of Honor Museum, Six Flags Over Texas, and now, a world-class location for our premier art museum.”

“All of us at the Arlington Tomorrow Foundation are delighted to continue to support the Arlington Museum of Art’s exhibitions and programming,” said Carolyn Mentesana, executive director of the Arlington Tomorrow Foundation, “and especially to help underwrite the renowned Pompeii: The Immortal City. This marks the official opening of the ‘reimagined AMA’ as the latest, exciting addition to our Entertainment District.”

“The Arlington Tomorrow Foundation has been an incredible partner of the Arlington Museum of Art over the last decade,” said Hightower, “and their support as presenting sponsor of Pompeii: The Immortal City is both thrilling and humbling.”

Outside the Lines: Reimagining the AMA

“In the last few years, the Arlington Museum of Art has honed its skills as a museum that never stands still,” said Hightower. “Now we have the opportunity to scale way up. The new AMA footprint will allow us to blend traditional, immersive, interactive, and evolving art forms in ways that will inspire, entertain, engage, and reflect our community and our world.”
