About José Guadalupe Posada

During his lifetime, José Guadalupe Posada (1852–1913) created an enormous body of work, particularly during his time as an illustrator and printmaker for publisher Antonio Vanegas Arroyo. Vanegas Arroyo was the editor of numerous publications, including inexpensive broadsides that were extremely popular with the masses. Together, during the years leading up to the Mexican Revolution, Vanegas Arroyo and Posada spoke to the people of their city, satirizing bourgeois life, the dictatorship of Porfirio Díaz, and politicians and celebrities of the day. Today, Posada is most revered by critics and contemporary artists for his interpretation of the calavera (skeleton), including those that appeared in broadsides printed in conjunction with Mexico’s annual observance of the Day of the Dead. The calavera was not his invention, but there is little doubt that Posada’s calaveras are the foundation of the symbol’s widespread use and popularization today.
