Arlington, TX – The Arlington Museum of Art is reopening its doors to the public with a brand new exhibit, Knox Martin: Living Legend. The exhibition will be open from July 18 – October 11, 2020.

In an effort to prioritize the safety of its staff, volunteers and visitors, the AMA will be implementing new health and safety procedures such as requiring face masks, reduced days of operation, checking the temperature of anyone who enters the facility, encouraging social distancing and sanitizing high touch surfaces every 30 minutes. Please see our website for our full list of COVID-19 procedures.

Knox Martin was born in 1923 in Barranquilla, Colombia. After serving in World War II, Martin attended the Art Students League of New York on the G.I. Bill from 1946-1950.  In 1954, Charles Egan of the renowned Charles Egan Gallery saw one of Knox Martin’s paintings at the Stable Gallery and asked Martin to show his work in a one-man show for the tenth anniversary of the Egan Gallery. Since then, Knox Martin has been a celebrated painter, sculptor and muralist. He has an extensive exhibition record and his work is in museum, corporate and private collections worldwide. Knox Martin has led a distinguished career teaching art and has been included in world-renowned institutions such as the Museum of Modern Art in New York, the Whitney, and the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden at the Smithsonian Institution. At 98, Martin is still actively working in New York City and has truly established himself as a living legend.

This exclusive exhibition was curated through a collaboration with the AMA, Knox Martin, Hollis Taggart Galleries, and LG Tripp Gallery. It exhibits 62 pieces of Martin’s work with dates spanning from 1952 to 2020. The exhibit includes works from Martin’s celebrated WOMAN and SHE series and will unveil the never before seen series, The Tomato Watercolors in the AMA’s rooftop gallery.
